Savannah made a tiny squeak that sounded suspiciously like, We’regonnadie?

“It’s perfume,” Reese managed. “Very expensive.” Then she linked arms with Mihi and Savannah and tugged them toward the castle. They hurried away from the troll, leaping from cloud to cloud like wispy stepping-stones to their doom. Mihi felt her whole world tilt when she looked down. In the darkness, she couldn’t see the colorful fantasyland beneath her, but she knew it was far, far down. Her vision blurred with fear.

She tightened her grip on Reese’s arm and looked ahead.

“Should we really be running toward the castle’s front entrance?” Savannah asked. “There must be another way in.”

“You were right about blending in,” Reese said. “We haven’t called too much attention to ourselves yet, so we should just follow the crowd. Besides, that troll might try to eat us if we stop.”

“I don’t want to be eaten,” Savannah said, which Mihi felt was kind of stating the obvious.

They ran-hopped toward the castle until they reached the double glass doors—and found themselves in the grandest party Mihi could have imagined.

Tuxedoed waiters poured fizzy drinks into goblets, and the liquid seemed to shift colors, like a rainbow in a bottle. Elaborate glass sculptures of birds (mostly geese but also ducks, swans, and, oddly, parakeets) filled every corner. A band played lively music on a transparent glass stage, and a harpist sat in a corner, playing for anyone who wandered nearby.

Whenever someone came close enough to the harp, they seemed almost enchanted, compelled to listen. Even at this distance, Mihi felt herself leaning toward the harp. It reminded her of the way she felt when she’d first heard the music of the Homesick River.

She took a step away.

This was a dangerous, frightful party.

But … it was a beautiful one. Creatures of all shapes and sizes danced, laughed, and prowled in their party masks and sparkling clothes.

And everything was big, grand, giant.

“Wow,” Mihi breathed.

She felt out of place in every way—and it wasn’t just the danger. She also had the feeling she often got around Genevieve, like she’d missed some important life lesson and didn’t know the right answer.

But then she remembered. For the next two hours, she was Genevieve! Maybe she could borrow some of her archnemesis’s confidence. Maybe, for this two-hour enchantment, she could belong somewhere fancy.

“Come here,” Reese hissed, gesturing toward an enormous goose sculpture. “Do you see that?”
